Colour Codes
Originally planned as a fire protection renovation, we developed a comprehensive design concept for the building extension from the 1980s, based on the existing structure of the Musterschule founded in 1803 in Frankfurt's Nordend. Thanks to a thorough examination of the available resources on-site, the result went beyond what was originally planned, using only a few and minimally invasive measures.
Details
One main component of the extensive renovation was the focus on developing a wayfinding system in the form of a new color concept. The existing color scheme of the listed historic building was taken as a starting point and further developed into a comprehensive overall concept. The renovation measures encompassed three floors with classrooms, as well as the floor of the sports hall and its associated changing rooms and sanitary facilities.
Building upon the colors yellow, blue, and green, a color concept was implemented that continued the floor colors of the historic building, creating a seamless transition to the existing structure. The different floors and their corresponding colors, just like in the historic building, establish spatial differentiation and thematic connections to the respective rooms, aiding in wayfinding and enhancing the overall visual coherence of the renovated spaces.
The associated gym hall was also extensively renovated and thoroughly modernized as part of the project. In addition to the visible and characteristic skylights from the street, the hall has gained brightness through a new wooden cladding on the impact wall. The hall walls are now uniformly covered with birch wood veneer, giving the space a cohesive and bright appearance.
The entire building services were renewed, including the lighting and security systems. The newly equipped control room allows for the operation of the sound system, scoreboard, and ceiling-mounted basketball hoops. Additionally, the use of perforated impact walls and the renewal of the ceiling surface significantly improved the room acoustics. In addition to the impact walls, the sports floor and suspended ceiling were also renewed. The previously subdued floor was replaced with a new blue linoleum sports floor featuring vibrant colored court markings. The sports hall has not only gained brightness through the comprehensive renovation but also achieved additional visual depth through the modernization of the suspended ceilings. The result is a contemporary and multifunctional hall.
